I've got a couple Franklin half dollars that have what looks like silver scaling (like fish scales) on parts of the coin. One 63d was so severe, I thought there was some very clear cellophane tape on the coin, but it was silver!

You can even see some grime build up near the edges like you'd see with tape. The part on Franklin's neck has a slightly raised bit where I carefully tried to get under what I thought was tape at the time.

I'm not sure but I think that is the result of being stored in PVC flips. It eats away at silver and leaves green slime.

Where did you get them?

Despite what the picture may look like, the rest of the coin is blazing white unc. Part of the scale looks like it stops abruptly and the other side of it fades into the coin where it's edge continues on both sides into what looks like a die crack.

edit: I got the coins separately. different sources.

Were the coins like this when you got them?

If not, what are you storing them in?

yes, they were both like this when I got them. the one pictured, I've had for a day, so its just sitting out now. This is definitely something that happened at the mint or to the planchet before minting.

perhaps these macro photos will better illustrate what I'm talking about. The other photo was taken with my phone :(

From the photos, you can see that only one edge of what I'm calling a scale, for lack of a better term, creates another layer on the coin; that is the edge going from Franklin's neck, through the date, and into "Trust."

Okay, those pictures tell a completely different story.

I have no idea what happened to that coin or when it happened.

I hope an expert comes along soon.

If you get the chance, post a photo of the reverse.

The reverse just looks like a standard unc FBL Franklin reverse with moderate die polishing lines. The obverse has lots of die polishing as well.

Looks like a lamination error to me. Nice one to find on a Franklin.

Forgot to mention, it looks specifically like a retained lamination.
