Hey everyone I purchased a coin collection from a young man yesterday for $650 bucks, It has a book of Civil War Tokens. It has a total of 37 tokens. I have never purchased these before and don't know much about them. I have done a little reading since the purchase and I believe these are very collectable. Please tell me what you think. Was this a good purchase. This is my first Civil War of anything I have Acquired.

Nice!

Can't tell anything specific from those pictures, but on an average $18/ piece, looks like you did fine!

These all appear to be common varieties, R-1 to R-3. IMHO. you paid a fair (ballpark) price. As the "Our Little Monitor" tokens are quite popular, they tend to fetch twice as much as most commons, or $35+ in average condition.

Now, if you buy the Fuld books, you can have the fun of attributing these!

37 divides $650 by $17.56 for each specimen. From a retail price perspective, that sounds about right.

Consider that, beyond its use to make change when genuine money was scarcely circulating, each individual token offers some story or insight into the history of the era. One token reads "Liberty and No Slavery." Another reads "Peace Forever" and offered an anti-war sentiment. "Our Card" and "Good For 1 Cent" speak to the practical use of the tokens in conducting everyday business. The common use of George Washington images was a reminder of how farmers, land owners, would go to war in defense of patriotic principles. Close study of these tokens literally transports a collector back in time ...

ExoGuy, I was reading the book Patriotic Civil War Token by George and Melvin Fuld and found it very interesting. I had no idea that regular currency was taken away from the south in 1862. I have never thought about it before. It was very difficult for people to do business with no form of coins in circulation. These are very interesting pieces. Thanks for the info.

This looks like a great book. I'm awaiting delivery of my copy. The seller here, Steve Hayden, runs phenominal auctions with premier catalogs that are well worth subscribing to.

That is the new book by David Bowers, and is excellent. You may want to consider joining the Civil War Token Society. As a member you will have access to nice discounts on token research books. Look here: http://www.cwtsociety.com/books.html

The CWTS publishes The Civil War Token Journal quarterly and is full of member researched articles.
