Well they already have it photographed so I would have to believe that would factor into it. Upgrading it would require them to admit to a mistake.

That is one of my concerns also. Strictly speaking, if a company is going to give an unbiased opinion, they should not or should not be able to consult things like checking on a previous grade of the coin.
This is one reason that I am slightly less then enthusiastic about resubmitting it.
Does anybody have any concrete knowledge on this question?

I have no experience with this but in your case, with such a nice coin, I would think submitting to another TPG would make sense.  |

I really wish I remembered more of the details but it has been many years and I only vaguely remember a few vague details. In one of the lectures that I went to, the speaker had mentioned of a gold piece in, I think, PR/MS-64 and worth 5 figures. The coin was high end for the grade and I think was resubmitted at least a dozen times. Each time, it got back the same grade. The graders had talked with one another about this one coin which they keep seeing over and over again. So it is possible that they could remember it and proceed to give it the same grade but it would depend on things like the time between resubmissions and if it goes to back the same graders that graded it the previous time. |

Any more thought given about a resubmitting the coin or going with another TPG? |

Not yet. I am probably going to hold off for a while. I have a few other coins that I want to try and resubmit before I risk anything with this one. I am not planning to sell the coin, so it is not hurting anything sitting in the holder....

Regardless of the grade assigned by PCGS, your coin is superior to the graded AU-55. If I had the money and the two coins were for sale for an equal price I would choose yours any day.

A friend of mine graded for PCGS and told me some coins would come in about once a year and all the graders knew it from sight due to marks or toning, etc. They were all very tough coins however, and this was back when PCGS only graded a fraction of coins they do today. If it gets submitted under the Secure slab service, or has been in the past, then I think they would only upgrade it if the market grading standards change significantly. Thundercoin, thank you for the kind words. Westcoin, I probably will resubmit it at some point, perhaps as a cracked out and resubmitted coin, or to a different TPG. That being said, this coin has not made the rounds of resubmissions. This is the only TPG grading it has received as it had been in storage in the family collection for a minimum of 50 years, and possibly much longer. The original acquisition is unfortunately lost to history on this one..... As I am sure that all of you who have submitted many coins to the TPG's sometimes get a negative that you can't explain, but sometimes get a gift  |

Send it to PCGS for a regrade accompanied by a letter with some of the comments from this group. They should recognize their mistake - this coin is clearly AU.
Would be a blow to their credibility if they kept it at XF-45
