I'm in the beginning stages of putting together a key date Morgan dollar set. A few of the key dates are out of my price range, 1893-S as an example, but with a little perseverance and stuffing my piggy bank, I think I can get it done! I have obtained the first coin in my quest. Here she is: 1888-S Thanks for looking!

That is a nice looking coin! The details are pretty strong but there is wear above the ear on the Obverse. Using the website ( http://www.cointalk.com/threads/exh...lar.115123/) as a source I believe it's grade falls somewhere between AU 50-53. However, I recognize I am not too skilled in grading so don't take my observation too seriously!

Nice coin! But that it's more in the EF-40/45 range, not strong enough details to make AU. About being cleaned... Very hard to tell from the photos if its been harshly cleaned or not... It does have the apperence of being dipped at somepoint but obviously thats not uncommon in the least for these early years.. Better pictures would be needed to tell for sure if it would be "market acceptable" with a details free grade... But either way still a nice addition to your collection! very nice!

I have to agree with the EF40/45 grade. It does look like it was cleaned

Yes, EF details, it has an artificial looking luster.

Thanks for the replies, fellas! I'm not sure if it has been cleaned or not. The seller claims that the coin has been in a 2 x 2 since the early 1970s. Of course it may have been cleaned at some point before that. I am happy with the EF-40 consensus. I dropped $200 for it, but I think I may have overpaid if it indeed has been cleaned.

Before looking at whatever you just posted, VF-XF details, cleaned.
EDIT: Yeah, it's definitely cleaned. You can tell because it looks way too clean given the amount of wear it has. $200 isn't THAT bad, but it's an ouch... By the way, it's got a weaker strike, so it's probably a solid XF details coin.

Also, you see that kind of toning on the top of the reverse? any time you see that dark, isolated toning near a rim, it's almost always a dead giveaway for a cleaning and/or overdipping. It can also form as spots on the coin.

Yeah...it does have a few spots on her cheek and on her cap. All good feelings are gone on this one. Absolutely destroyed. At least it's a key date, I suppose.

We all pay tuition one way or another in the world of numismatics. I lost about $100 on a coin when I was a newbie, and that (and your loss) is nothing compared to some stories I've heard. People paying $40+ per coin for rolls of cleaned Morgans worth $15 each (back when silver was cheaper) and whatnot... this is nothing. Keep the coin around as a lesson and reminder and move on.
I still have that cleaned piece of crap I paid $110 for in my 2x2 book on the first page. Every time I open that book, I see it and it reminds me that constant vigilance is a necessary evil in the world of coins.

The thing that irritates me to no end is that I held this 2 x 2 in my own hands, looked at the coin with my own eyes and I still messed up! I saw the key date, got tunnel vision and that was that. SWING AND A MISS!!
