I'm talking all denominations US Mint. And coins that cost in the hundreds or less in the lower grades. A couple obvious examples are the 1909-S VDB penny, 1955/55 penny, etc. I can name some others as well, like the 1921 Peace dollar, and a couple others. I basically want to compile a list of some of the most popular keys that aren't just for the rich and famous.

Benji nailed quite a few good ones there. One thing I like to do is just page through the RedBook. You can easily pick out the keys and semi-keys as there is usually an extra decimal place. I also like focusing on the low mintage items. There are quite a few with equally low mintages that don't command the same premium as another. Not sure why, but maybe you can find a semi-key before it really is one!!!! That's what I'm hoping for.

When it comes to commemoratives, I think mintage is the only factor, and it's also easy to scan in the RedBook.

I agree with what tights said about low mintage coins that are underpriced. I call these "PSK's- for potential semi-keys". These are probably coins that will go up a lot in value in the future.

To add a little to the first poster's question- The biggest keys in the Walker series are 1921-D, 1921-P, 1938-D, 1916-S.

Really strange but it sort of depends on the area from what I've found out from dealers that travel alot. An example is I have man sets of Lincoln Cents. #1 is all MS except a few. Naturally the 22Plain is one of those. However, the 1920D is just being elusive in MS grades around here. many dealers have told me they just can't find one. Here is my list of the rest:
Lincoln Cents 09S VDB, 09S, 22Plain, 55 Double Die, 72 Double Die, Buffalo/Indian Head Nickels is naturally the 37 3legged one, Mercury dimes is the 16D,21, 21D, 42/41, 42D/41, 45 Micro S. Strange that the 31D is the 4th lowest mintage in the Merc's but has very little value. With quarters naturally the 32D and 32S Washingtons. Walking halves it is naturally the 21 and 21D and that 38D is coming up there also. There are many, many others in older types of coins but they are also becoming rare and really expensive. For example anyone just starting a Standing Liberty quarter will find all are just to expensive for a beginner.

USArmyParatrooper,
A lot of "key date" coins can be obtained with relative ease. I have had the best luck when visiting B&Ms and asking if they have "key date XYZ" in low grade or damaged/problems. Many times these are not in the display case b/c they do not bring $$$. I check ebay, but low grade/problem keys usually go for problem free money (probably due to the convenience factor). Aside from the 93s I obtained each one of the coins in my aforementioned post for less than approx. $150/each all have graffiti, holed, PO01, or post mint planchet damage. Just contact fellow collectors or dealers and ask...you are bound to find cheap keys.

I have recently started collecting again after a 13 year abscence. I decided to get back into the swing of things by putting a Type set together. What I did was go through my old 1994 Red Book and mark down all of the low mintage coins which would cost under $100 in the lowest grade listed. When I bought the new Red Book I compared the prices to see how much more I'd be paying for them now. Here are the more interesting statistics.

Coin / 2007 price / 1994 price / Increase

1909 VDB Penny/ $8 / $6 / 400%
1912S Nickel / $140 / $35 / 400%
1932S Quarter / $185 / $32 / 578%
1866 S No Motto Half Dollar / $225 / $45 / 500%
1899 Dollar / $120 / $30 / 400%

And the grand-daddy of them all.

1914 Half Dollar / $150 / $18 / 833% (!!!!!)

Interesting finds, magusxxx. I have a '96 Red Book and I've compared the 2008 prices to the 1996 prices before. They're in many cases vastly different.

For Lincoln Cent keys and semi keys, add the 1914-D and 1931-S. For Indian Head cents, add 1908-S and 1909-S.

I have it in spreadsheet format. And for some reason it won't copy percentages. So, you'll have to do a little conversion on your own. For instance, 1.5 would be 150%. Also the spacing didn't work correctly so I hope it's not that hard to read.

1793 Chain Cent
1877 and 1909-s IHC
1909-s vdb, 1914-d Lincoln Cents
1802 Half Dime
1822 Dime
1894-s Dime
1796 Quarter
1824 Quarter
1794 Half Dollar
1796 and 1797 Half Dollars
1817/4 Half Dollar (if we're counting varieties)
1838-o Half Dollar
1928 Peace
1889-cc, 1893-s,1895 Morgans

A few of the coins above really are just for those who can drop hundreds of thousands of dollars on coins, but there are exceptions. The morgans (besides the 1895) can be picked up under $500 if you're willing to accept problems. The Peace dollar is right around $500 for a MS63 example. The older coins on that list are harder to find under $1000, but it's doable. Mostly, it depends on how many problems you're willing to accept.
