As we all know there is a new fractional set coming out this month. Compared to last years one, it costs 50$ more, but has selective gold platting, which I personally really like. Same mintage (9.999), but taking into consideration how much last years one was demanded, I think this one will really be something.
Any thoughts ?

I ordered this set (and the last set), but I am not a flipper and has no intention to sell. I am just a sucker of reverse proof coins.
I also want to comment that one of the many reasons the last fractional set was doing well, was that there were sellers compared that set to the "25th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set". which was in high demand and some people were willing to pay over a thousand dollars for a graded set. Some sellers used that comparison and leaded people to think that the same will happen to the last SML fractional set.

I ordered 1 also for me, not for flipping (except if someone is willing to pay me 1 thousand $ for it). I love the gold plating coins. It's expensive, yes, but it's difficult to say no, that's why RCM is doing very well...

I really like this set. It's better looking than the 25th Anniversary set IMO. Will be glad to add it to my collection.

Nice looking but I just can't pull the trigger on this one. Buying it will feel like giving in when there are already two other 25th anniversary offerings that precede this one. The 1oz gold plated standalone was also designed by a friend of ours. This current set is pretty to the eyes but unfortunately will feel like spam if I ever hold it my hands. Irks of marketing ploy and money grab. Wouldn't put it past the RCM to get churn another 25th anniversary silver maple out before the year's end. Maybe a 1oz that's not plated or in a set, or a 1oz with edge lettering, or a proof finish one, and then another proof finish fractional set, and a colourized one, one with rocks or glass glued on, and another with........ I wonder how selective plating is done at the RCM. Not individually by hand I would not think. The value of the weight of plated gold would be a few dimes if not pennies considering how thin Au can be stretched and plated. With the massive drop in spot silver prices since the last 25th anniversary fractional set, I would thought (naively) that this current set would be at least the same price if not cheaper. Now it just feels like a marketing ploy to up the price by advertising the gold plating. Edited to edit out 2 am language - still a bit of a rant though so i'll apologize ahead of time

poboxw, have to agree with most of what you said, other than the 25th anny stuff. This set is not another anniversary set.
Maybe, and I stress maybe, the Mint would have been justified in asking 250 for the set if they had packaged it in a nice box because the maroon clamshell case is a joke for a quality presentation and they should feel shame (or is that sham?).
Still, I think the gold plating will look very good on the set and I did order one. I have all of the other Ag fractional sets so this keeps my collection complete.
However, I think at least part of the price increase has to be attributed to the market. If the market has settled in at about $300 for the 25th anny set that sold for $200, one could expect that this newest set will command a similar market price. Why shouldn't the mint expect to sell their product for closer to it's potential market value? After all, they are retailers not wholesalers.

I agree with CC-Ottawa, and again, this is not 25th anniv SML.

The description of this set from RCM website stated that the packaging of this set is maple wood case. I hope this is real? Packaging: Your coins are encapsulated and presented in a Canadian maple wood case, lined with flock, and protected by a black sleeve.

I hope that it is the wood box. I would make me feel better about the extra $50

I e-mailed my rep and asked about the case. It is type error. It is confirmed by RCM rep, that it is clamshell box (case)

What a rip off. How much more would it really cost to put it in a wooden box? I would pay extra for a nice box.

^^^^ That is why I did not buy it. Plus $300 is too much. And too high mintage of 9999.

I don't think 9,999 is excessive mintage & new Canadian coin collectors by the day - Canadian coins are collected worldwide nowadays due to web & marketing.
