hello
i am really new at this....i am looking for a present for my husband I know he wants a 1928 CYPRUS 45 PIASTRES... he loves his coin collection.
i have couple of choices on ebay
but other than couple of thinks he taught me (crown diamond, bruises on the coin etc )i really don't know what should l look for. and also I am not sure how much should I give for a coin like this. I wouldn't like to be taken for a fool.i found couple of coins on ebay but I think this looks like its in good condition although I have no idea what undergrated means.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1928-CYPRUS...161114065732

I need advise from people like you who understand and appreciate my husbands hobby please let me know if you have any suggestions. etc

By undergraded, the seller seeks to convince buyers that the coin is better than is ststed by the graders of PCGS.

That may be true, but PCGS generally know what they're doing and while it's in a holder with a grade of AU58, no-one will consider it to be better than that.

Welcome to Coin Community, yiota.

These are my thoughts on the particular coin you've linked: The AU58 grade usually reflects a conservative opinion on the part of the grading professional, when there is some doubt that the coin has never seen circulation even though there may be evidence that it hasn't. In the case of this coin - understanding that one can never be sure from photographs like the ones with the auction - I think PCGS awarded the grade based more on the quantity and type of marks on the coin, rather than any apparent wear. I would offer a similar opinion of it; I see marks which are unlikely to appear unless the coin occupied a pocket with other coins, or was handled in the presence of other coins. Either of those being true defines the coin as "circulated," even if it was not ever actually used in commerce.

So I will agree with the grade. The seller might have looked at the coin, seen no wear and pronounced it "undergraded" because of the belief that no wear means "Uncirculated." They seem like a reputable lot, and have sold more than one of these in the past. With that in mind, look at their most recent Feedback from 18 September, for an identical coin of AU58 in an NGC slab. That coin, to my mind, is somewhat inferior to the one you've linked, but my opinion is tentative because of the differing photographic methods used.

The PCGS coin has very nice luster and - to me - shows no wear. The grade is appropriate, and the price which the previous NGC coin fetched (US$170) should serve as the upper limit (or slightly more) of what you would consider spending on the PCGS coin. These are a low-mintage issue, but as such have great liquidity on the market and are therefore frequently found for sale. Similar coins are the 1938 Australia 1 Crown and the US 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent. So, if this one escapes you at the price I mentioned, understand that there will be another available soon and patience will be rewarded.

fioti,
I notice that one of them appears twice on the list.

Did somebody find a mint bag of them or are they undetected fakes ?

My guess is the seller offered two different coins using the same images, perhaps in error.
