There were just over 10% less '48 silver dollars produced compared to '47 Maple Leaf. Yet in many grades the '48 costs 3 to 5 times more money, not just a 10-20% difference. Why would that be?

I always wondered the same thing.

I think it basically comes down to 1948 being a key date and 1947ML being perceived as a variety of 1947. I guess collectors absolutely have to have 1948, but can live without 1947ML.

The only reason for the large price difference is that collectors are willing to pay. It's as simple as that.
Desirabilty trumps rarity every time.
For many years the '48 was priced about 10% higher than the '47ML

You can find a nice 48 just about any day of the week. On the other hand it is a tough go finding a desirable 47 Maple leaf. There are a couple of reasons.Tthe average dollar collector collects a date set and there are three different 47s. Also most people knew that the 48 was a scarce coin from day one. All of them were made in one week in late 1948 ( December). Thus the 48 is a "story" coin and the Leaf ......well lets say ho hum! All this aside I will take a choice 1945 Silver dollar any day!
