We live in an age of instantaneous communication and information. With my computer, I can do legal research at home within one hour that, only ten years ago, would have taken me all day in a law library. When I buy a coin on ebay, I pay immediately through PayPal and think that delivery of the coin should be made within a week, but ten days at most. Do you think that time frame is reasonable? Is there any legitimate business reason that a seller cannot deliver a coin within ten days?

Have you been in contact with the seller? They could be out of town (no excuse) or there could be a family emergency or even a death in some cases. technically a seller is alloted 30 days to ship an item I believe. I have a Very small business and I normally get every one of my packages mailed out the very next day.
good luck

7 to 10 days is reasonable , but most of the insurances USPS,U-Pick ect.take up to 30 days to be viable if the Item does not show up .
I buy from the same sellers on a regualr basis and I know how long the normal is ,, in the same breath I can tell you that I have received Items from the east coast in 3 days ,, I have also received Items from the east coast in 12 days ,, I think some of it can be attributed to local things like actual pick up times and where the central hubs are from those locations.
I dont mind waiting as long as I know for sure the Item shipped and the seller is reliable if there is a problem .

I think it is a good idea to have a cadre of favorite reliable sellers in one's numismatic specialty, but now and then someone else has just the coin you are looking for. If the seller has at least a 99.5% positive feedback out of at least 500, and accepts PayPal, I submit a bid. Most of thhe time, I get the coin within 7 days. If I paid $5 in postage and see actual postage of $1.30, and a 10-day delivery, I give a positive feedback but no repeat business. ebay has made it easy to find another coin, just as another bus comes along if you happen to miss the first one. Thanks for the information. I am now aware that some sellers are the sole operator of the business and may have an illness or family matter that make it impossible to ship the coin immediately upon payment.

Houston, I think it would be more fair to judge the seller by when the item was shipped, not when you receive it. According to you, if a seller shipped the next day after receiving payment, yet you haven't received it in 10 days - you wouldn't deal with this seller again. In this situation I really don't see why the seller doesn't deserve your business again.

Roman- You are absolutely right. The delivery of US mail is unpredictable. Some packages arrived in 4 days while others, from the same seller but at another time, took 6 days.

Usually talking about coin delivery I would say that "processing" may take 1 (2 max)"business days" that is acceptable.Once the seller ship it depends on the service they use and where the buyer is located, also the time of the year but coast to coast first class may take 4 to 7 business days. Priority mail 2 to 5 business days. You have to consider a couple of factors: 1)Location (both parts) 2)Day of the shipment 3)Time of the delivery ( If you pay at night count the first business day as the next day for processing) 4)Processing time (from the seller - time the seller took to mail the piece after you pay) 5)Service the seller used 6)Packaging (sometimes boxes take longer than a flat envelope)
10 days is acceptable if you do a combination of factor it may take longer.... lets say you bought a coin on a Saturday 4PM and you paid... the seller needs at least one day to process the transaction, let say they ship on the next business day after the day of "processing" (in case this seller is one person and has a lot of sales) so he ships Tuesday but he did it late that day... you probably are talking that the package won't move till next day which is Wed. so far 5 days and the package did not even move from the location... 3-4 more days...and coast to coast it may take 6-7 days... first class...so do the math ans see that 10-12 days is a perfect case without negligence from the seller.
Best way to know is to contact the seller and at the moment that you pay leave a note saying: PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU SHIP THE PACKAGE. That is the best way to control the service and also take care of your package. ;)

The past few years the only payment I'd accept is postal money orders. So that way I could cash them and send the package at the same time. This would let the buyer realize it would only be a day or two after delivery before their package would be sent.

Bill, Send a friendly note to the seller with a request for shipping status. As a low-volume seller (my overages/duplicates only) it's easy for me to get the coin out the same day as payment is received. The high-volume guys have a tougher time. The longest I waited was six weeks for a beautiful '92 barber half from a seller in the Philippines. The seller only took personal checks and they had to clear first. There was definite anxiety as I waited for what seemed forever ... was I scammed? Did it get lost in the mail or hung up in customs? It did finally arrive and was perfect. ebay's new feedback system allows you to rate shipping cost/time. As mentioned previously, don't count the time in transit, only the postmark. Wishing you luck!

I try to ship within a day or two of receiving paymet and like others have said, then it is all up to the Post Office.
I have sent coins to Aussie that have gotten there in 7 days and others that took almost three weeks because the package got delayed in the Phillipines.
So once the packaged is dropped in the mail, you don't have any control of when it gets there.
