Hi to all,

i have bought this coin about 3 months ago and I have been surprised by its brilliance luster and strong details.

I have decided to send it to Pcgs for grading but before I will do it I like to hear your opinion for its condition and a potential grade it could take.

Looks to be EF+ on the british grading scale (This is a very good grade in the UK - a BU red penny from 1790 would be called EF+). On a different UK scale, id call it uncirculated (its a tricky system - anything which changed hands, even once, is by definition circulated).

I'd say it has a shot at MS-65, but that minor rim-nick at 10:30 may hold it back.

I quote from Coincraft's Standard Catalogue for the Victorian Two Pound pieces:
"A large number of forgeries exist, especially of the 1887 coin. Many of these are of poor quality and 'wear' differently from genuine coins, especially around the head and breast of St. George. However many of these fakes are difficult to detect. Because of the prevalence of these 're strikes', as some dealers like to call them, it is probably advisable to look for coins in very fine condition, with a genuinely old appearance.

As with five pound pieces, care must be taken not to confuse proofs with early strikings. The rims and milling of genuine proofs should be examined whenever (you can), so that one becomes familiar with their appearance."

dear sel_69l ,

the reference you have done of forgeries means that you believe that my coin belongs to this category

I have checked it quiet well and haven't found any details to lead me to this conclusion...

Can you be more specific please ?

To me the coin pictured here seems to be quite OK.
Nevertheless, I feel the need to point what the professionals at Coincraft have to say about these generally.

It has some unfortunate wear (cabinet friction?)
The rims have also had a bit of afters.
EF plus a smidge.
