I've heard of such varieties when it comes to these pennies but never been able to differentiate between what constitutes a low or high sea level, as well as where from the distance between the trident to the "P" is measured. Can somebody with information on this chime in please? Thanks.

Michael Gouby wrote three authoritative books on bronze pennies. If you're thinking of getting into this series it might be worth trying to find a copy of the 1860-1970 book to look at!

This link to his website shows the difference between the low and high varieties:

splendid article! confirmed my last minute observations before deciding whether to pull the trigger on one of them on ebay. Why couldn't those folks back then just make it easier for us collectors and make it a real high tide? Thanks for the link Tom! Cheers!
