Looking for some opinions of the grade of this morgan, before any third party grading.

Is the hair above the ear weakly struck or worn?

I was having a tough time telling. To me, it looks like slight wear, but I'm no expert...

Wow!! I can't see it grading below AU-58. I think it is very unlikely it will grade MS. The luster looks a little disturbed on the cheek and the marks there look more like ones that a coin would receive from circulation rather than in a bag. I think the hair above the ear and the breast feathers also show a little bit of wear. One of my concerns is the portrait seems to have a shinyness that may indicate a cleaning but that may just be a result of the photography. Another concern is what may be a light staple scratch in the field in from of the eye to between PL. I don't think the scratches on the jaw will cause it to details. If a TPG deems it problem free, you could in for a nice pay day! Personally, I would submit it to PCGS. I was wondering if you could provide a few details as to how you came to acquire it. Anyways, it is a spectacular coin whatever it grades!

It appears to be a lightly circulated coin as there are contact marks that are not consistent with those resulting from being stored in bags. The surfaces look as though they may have been cleaned or rubbed with the indifference in appearance between the fields and devices particularly on the obverse. It could be the photos though? All in all, a very valuable coin regardless. If you get that into a righteous AU55 or AU58 holder you are a winner. Best of luck and keep us posted. Let me add to the forum and what an entrance!

For those offering grades, keep in mind this is one of the half-dozen rarest Morgans in Mint State. This coin is a poster child for the good reasons to prefer a high AU coin over a low MS example. Before circulating, it would have been an easy MS65+, which would have made it a major rarity in today's market, a six-figure coin. As-is, the technical grade is AU53-55. I have to admit just a touch of concern over the appearance of the obverse, though. It doesn't quite ring right to me. All the same, in a "good" slab this is a $2000+ coin and it needs to be in the hands of a TPG.

Thanks for all the replies and welcoming me to the forum!
Everyone seems to think a mid to high AU, but also mentioned a possible cleaning... I hope to send it to PCGS and get it back without an AU Details/Cleaning grade. By the way, how much does that knock down the value of a coin, since it isn't assigned a number? For example, AU53 versus AU Details Cleaning.

First thing I see is that it is cleaned/wiped IMO. AU53 details. Possibly get an XF45 net or details grade.
