counties like Nieu island who doesn't even have their own mint, in my opinion are like Franklin mint products, what does spiderman relate to Nieu island? that's probably why there is little news in the major numismatic publications.

Hello john100! The US mint would never do such a commemorative coin and someone should. Spiderman has been big in the US for decades and am glad someone is celebrating the 50th year! Each to his own & if I knew that French cliché I would say it in French.

Niue is hard to spell right and yet these coin releases are putting it on the map....Is it a big problem if these popular characters like Dr Who and Spider Man are struck in coinage by an unknown country island when the giant countries like the UK and America ignore them? Besides the mintages are so small that they soon will be sold out anyways and put away in collections while the UK and the USA wonder what just happened. Well what just happened was that Niue has become a name to be reckoned with in modern coinage and you can be sure that Dr Who will be landing the Tardis there one day. and I'm sure Spiderman will be having battles on Niue with sea monsters in a comic book some day soon.

Say what: Sorry but I need to burst your bubble on Niue somewhat. Niue is a semi independent state. Although self governing New Zealand acts for it in diplomatic terms and unless their has been some major change Citizens of Niue are citizens of New Zealand. The official currency of Niue is the New Zealand dollar. These NCLT coins have very little to do with Niue, basically the New Zealand mint( a private operator) fishes around for some country to provide it with a flag of convenience...ie: the NZ mint decides what "coins it wants to sell to collectors then it hunts for a small state who , for a fee, will agree to have their countries name put on it...... these issues are little different to those of the Popjoy mint or the now defunct Franklin mint. I realize some people like them but they are never going to be worth anything other than the silver value. I know at least one person has disagreed with me...but look at the issues from Liberia......how much have they gone up in value. then look at a real coin...say an Ansell sovereign...how much has that gone up in value over the last 15 years. Collect the Niue "coins" for enjoyment but don't fool yourself into expecting any significant return.

I do appreciate your comments & information. You bought a Superman round versus a legal currency coin. Silver/gold rounds only go up & down with the metal value. Legal coins from wherever will always have an additional value IMO. Mintage plays a part but rounds are a totally different market. I understand you being teed off about no appreciation in the worth of your Superman round but you shouldn't shun the possibility that this could be a hot item down the road. Pretty cool a transplant from New Zealand (?) to Austria, if I am getting online name right?

I have lived in Austria for 13 years. the superman round was purchased at the height of the Hunt brothers fiasco. As for the Dr Who and Spiderman coins they are not any different to that Superman round I purchased. I will repeat: 5000 for such coins is a huge mintage. If you look at the NCLT issues from New Zealand you will find the proof sets average mintage is not more than 2000 and some special issues the mintage is 250-500. the reason for the low mintages is that experience has shown ,unless its LOTR, mintage's lower than 2000 do well in the secondary market anything larger than that flounders. Niue is the same. I suggest you look at historical performance of coins like the one you are buying......I repeat they do not do well..... Note I believe there is a difference between a Numismatist and a collector...... a numismatist looks for coins that have a historically important story behind them ( as opposed to commemorating something historical). A collector just collects coins that; either fill in spaces in an album, or are like the Niue issue. I doubt that any one in Nuie has ever seen them and I am confident that you can't buy them in Niue Edit: here is an example of how slowly they sell: http://www.nzmint.com/starwars/dart...der-coin-set Produced in 2011 massively high mintage of 7500, and they still haven't sold out......star wars has a much wider appeal than Dr Who and has more fans than spider-man. Edit: For further comparison look at this NZ Proof set ( prices are in NZ dollars) mintage is 1500.....and from past experience it will take another12-18 months for the sets to be sold out, http://coins.nzpost.co.nz/2013/new-...currency-set

I bought one cause I used to read a lot of comics as a kid and love Spider-Man and superman and love coins I hope it goes up in value and if I could have afforded it I would bought a couple more to flip.It helps me with extra money to buy other coins I like or want.I think it might go up in value but not like superman there are a lot of spidey fans out there I think.

@austrokiwi The term numismatist applies to collectors and coin dealers as well as scholars using coins as source or studying coins. wikipedia definition if the spider man coins were produced by the USA mint would that make them more acceptable to you? fact is they are interesting coins superbly packaged and they will have great selling power to Spider man fans worldwide who knows if they will have a steady appreciation in value..that will depend on whether collectors will be willing to part with them comparisons to Star Wars are not useful because Star Wars has no definable character...even Dr Who is less complicated than Star Wars and he has 11 characters whereas Spider man is one guy like Superman or Batman and that appeals to folks worldwide...I love Star Wars and Star Trek but I wouldnt touch the coins for investment but Spider Man and Superman have a 75 yr proven collector market and thats where you will get winners and choosing winners in NCLT is very difficult as you have pointed out but like any investment game you pay your money and you take your chances.....numismatics involves investment in time and money and in my opinion we are all numismatists in these forums

I thought I would get a bite on the definition of numismatist...I personally wouldn't follow a dictionary definition with a specialized field....In Austria people have degrees in numismatics..... they have a real right to be called numismatists.... I would at best only describe myself as a student of numismatics......I believe a true numismatist researches and adds to the knowledge of economic and numismatic history.....if you just rely on other peoples research...your just a collector!!

im relatively new to forums period but I have noticed that numismatists in all areas I've explored from Ancient coins to modern NCLT all exhibit the fatal flaws of human egotism and of course no one is more guilty of that than myself. All numismatists are students because there is so much to learn. My definition of a true numismatist is a person who is obsessed with coins throughout their lifetime....they have a passion for coins which usually starts in childhood.....they may be rich or poor...educated or not...I appreciate your views austrokiwi...austrian coins have a great history and I have a few in my collection including a gold plated piece that my father left me from the 1800s a fake ducat or something..

Just wondering if anybody else has gotten their Spidey's in hand yet? I still think anyone who has enjoyed the comic books, cartoons or movies would like. New movie coming out in 2014.

Just received Spider Man sets from Down Under.....WOW! I am shocked!..the set is huge...i didnt realize how big the metal box is...at 4X6 inches and 2 in deep it is vastly oversized...the coa and booklet are equally impressive now to the coin itself.......The coin is very large and well designed and the finishes are intricate textures as follows...Obverse::::mirror finish with frosty type cameo and frosty legend with a reeded edge ::: Reverse::colored and textured spider man image is in 3 D and quite alive...background buildings are in flat incused relief and have great perspective..Lettering and date are incused but 7 little spiders are not...finishing on silver outside rim area has small flaws but nothing serious like the original photograph..of the 2 coins I examined one is better than the other in this regard....The case insert for the coin tends to hold the coin quite well making it a bit difficult to take out..i had to turn the case upside down to get the coin out easily! but that is better than too loose..the artwork on the case is really first class as well and size of the image on the case is large....overall I would say...get em while you can!..i will post an image or two asap..

Great description of the coin CASSIDY77 & I am glad someone else has in hand to compare. Like I said, I am impressed with the coin & case & still think they would grade PF 69 or 70. Why grade when they come in such excellent packaging!
