I had posted this coin a few weeks ago. The pictures were not very good. I have since updated some things (lens, tripod, lights) and the new photos are a better representation of the look of the coin. I still have a long way to go photographing coins but these are better. These photos have been cropped to fit but otherwise have not been edited for light, etc. At some point I will redo the obverse photo. Let me know what you think now. Thanks for looking again. I edited this Sunday night to include two new photos using suggestions from a fellow member. Edited by tpg22 10/06/2013 9:01 pm

Obverse looks cleaned from your photos. Way too washed out.

Still working on that. The obverse photo is not accurate. There is some luster. It's hard with pre21 WLH's because the grading is so different for those. I see 72 views with only one reply. This one will go to PCGS. It will be interesting what they say. I'm hoping for AU58.

It is a nice example of an early walker and I agree with your assessment of AU 58. Some concerns a TPG may have is the staining on the observe as well as the apparent scratch at liberty's hand. Personally I feel it is a great candidate for an album and I would reserve PCGS for ms coin appraisals.

These photos are much better (the obverse). A bit of wear, and I believe you'll get it back in a AU55 slab.

If it's not cleaned, I'll say 55. A touch too much wear on the obverse.

Thanks to all. When I check the graded coins on ebay I am always one grade low on the early walkers. I plan to send it in to PCGS because I have been working on a Everyman's collection of AU (most years) and EF for the tough years full WLH registry set. For that set every coin must be AU58+ or lower. One guy has the entire set in AU58 and AU58+ coins. With some I will buy them already graded but I have not come across any as nice as what I have been finding.

@tpg22,
Good luck on your quest as I feel it is a great one to attempt. I have found over the years a high AU coin often has better eye appeal than a low MS one. Looking forward to seeing your results.

Thanks muddler. I will probably join and use the free grades on the ones it makes no sense to grade. Some I will try to buy already graded. I would like to find AU58+ for most of the 40's. The others I try to buy raw and hope for AU53-58. I don't want to just buy already graded coins because that takes out a lot of nice ones. I just picked up a 16D, 18S, 33S, 34S, 36S that are really nice. Those will go with this one to PCGS.
I may never finish it but I will die trying.

I think I'm with you on the grade, obverse-driven. As regards cleaning, I'm calling it "unlikely" based not on my knowledge of the issue, but on my knowledge of the photographic process in general and the specific coin here, since I'm working with tpg22 in the Photography forum and this is the reference coin we're using. I'm comfortable that the surfaces are original.
