I've been shooting detailed photos of certified coins I'd like to sell but I've found that most of them have scratches on the slabs and some are quite heavy. I also have seen coins that I would have bought, but the scratches are so heavy that they distract from the coin or make it look like the coin is damaged.

I can use a soft box for lighting the coins I want to sell and it helps mask the scratches, but I really don't want to sell certified coins that look bad. I always note in my listings if the slab is scratched so the buyer knows of the problem before they buy.

Does anyone know how to repair these scratches so they don't look quite as bad?

I'm thinking of buying a kit to polish the plastic headlight covers used on most cars. Has anyone tried this? I know it will help with oxidization of the plastic on the headlights, but do you think it could help with a scratched slab?

If anyone has tried this or knows of another way to repair the slabs, please let me know.

Thanks!
Ben

In use a plastic polish from an automotive store and it works fine.

Yes, very much so. It's been tried, and it works. Feedback is that NGC slabs are tougher plastic than PCGS ones, and harder to refinish. A Dremel with a polishing wheel is the high-zoot solution, but you have to treat it with respect lest you sand right through the plastic. Best leave the biggest gouges alone and consider reslabbing.

Coin supplies shops such as Wizard will sell slab repair goo. It's basically the same stuff as the headlight repair goo the OP mentions. You might want to test it with a slab you don't particularly care about first, just to make sure the goo is compatible with the plastic the slab is made from. Here's an old thread on the subject.

Yes you can repair minor scratches. I use this stuff called SLAB-RENEW which I purchased on ebay and I found it to be very useful and it last a long time.

Great information and thanks for the suggestions. I've got a slab or two that I bought with some medium scratches. I'll test it out on those and see how it works.

I asked a seller about a photo of a coin I wanted that showed some heavy scratches and he said it was just fact that it was a photo. All slabs show scratches but you don't notice them in hand. I know that a flash will show the scratch and shadow more than just normal light, but I passed on that coin because it had 20 or more deep lines across the coin "window" area.

If I'm selling a graded coin, I want the slab to look as nice as possible in the photos, so I'll be trying to polish out as much as possible without destroying the slab.

Thanks again!
