After looking at one of my 53 S Franklins again I realized the spot on it was more than a spot. Where you see that spot under the right wing (from a looking at it viewpoint) theres just nothing. The bottom of the wing is missing and its like it either all chipped off or stuck to the dye.

PCGS didnt give it a details grade so basically I'm wondering if its worth sending back in to have attributed and really what it is if anyones seen these before.

It is hard to see the fine detail in the pic but the missing detail was probably caused by aggressive die polishing. 1953-S Franklins are notorious for poor die quality and it is by far the toughest issue to find in FBL.

I'll try and get some better pics tomorrow with natural light. I have no good indoor pic set up and it was raining here all day.

Basically though there's no detail in that little blob showing. The wings missing, ther luster is missing, really the top layer of metal just seems to be missing like it was ripped off getting stuck to the dye right there. There's no damage or circulation marks anywhere on the coin though.

Is this something common with the series or would it be worth sending in as an error coin/variety?

Based on your description, I'm guessing it's a strike through metal or something solid like that. Under greater magnification it might show as a departed lamination, though.

My best guess would be a filled die in that area.
Grease is often the culprit.

Thanks solo for editing that pic. I was trying to find that one but think I deleted it.

Hopefully that gives a clearer view of what I was trying to explain.
