I've been collecting coins for probably close to two decades. They can be fun - handled all kinds of metals from base metal iron, copper, zinc, to exotic metals such as tantalum and antimony.

I've always like to handle coins raw as well as treat them with acetone when they are needed. It's only very recently that there are some coins that I have handled especially some of the older Chinese coins coins that I'm starting to get nasty itches after handling them. Geez they must be loaded with some nasty metal - I just can't figure out what they are. I've handled nickel and cobalt - most common metals to cause allergic reactions. I'm suspecting there's traces mercury in them. I'm sure you can develop such allergies late in life.

My food of thought is: how "iron"ic would it be for a coin collector not be able to handle coins in raw? Just thought it's a cruel twist for coin collectors to not be able to handle coins raw.

Allergies can also develop over time with continued exposure so you may not have bee allergic but now are becoming so.

Very old copper often has purity problems with contamination from arsenic and/or antimony. They can be very difficult to remove from copper by smelting.

Would the regular exposure to acetone be having some effect, either by breathing the vapour or through the skin? I guess that there is industrial data safety information published on this powerful organic solvent.

I have absolutely no sense of smell.
I did an environmental report on the disposal of industrial organic solvents, which included tri chlorethylene. This solvent was used for cleaning engine parts for the F/A 18 jet fighter. I was exposed to a 3,000 liter open container of this rather mean solvent. It is poisonous AND carcinogenic to the liver. The powerful fans for controlling vapour had to be disabled at the time of inspection.

Not impossible to develope an alergy to metals or a specific one. However, prior to thinking that, you should probably look back at where you get your coins and/or currency. Expecially currency. Not sure if you've ever noticed how many people use their spit to wet their hands to count money. Many people use their fingers in their nose, spit on the streets, wipe their mouths with their hands and in many other non menionable places here. After that they then handle the coins and currency they hand you.
Long before developing a problem with touching coins, you should consider what you may have picked up from coins and courrency per what I mentioned above. Ever notice how many stores are now providing that stuff for your hands to sanitize them? That too is due to what people, especially kids, do on a shopping cart.
I suggest you check with a dermatologist just to play safe. But I really suspect it's something from coins or currency you are getting.

MayoClinic.com says:

" Nickel allergy is one of the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis â€" an itchy rash that appears when your skin touches a usually harmless substance.

Nickel allergy is commonly associated with earrings and other jewelry, particularly jewelry associated with body piercings. But nickel can be found in many everyday items â€" from coins to zippers, from cellphones to eyeglass frames.

Nickel allergy can affect people of all ages. A nickel allergy usually develops after repeated or prolonged exposure to items containing nickel. Treatments can reduce the symptoms of nickel allergy. Once you develop nickel allergy, however, you will always be sensitive to the metal and need to avoid contact."

My understanding (and I am a metallurgist, btw) is that *everyone* will eventually become allergic to nickel with enough exposure. However, individuals vary in how much exposure that requires.

Poison ivy works the same way - you may spend years not getting it, but once you start, you get it every time.
