Verus was the son of Aelius Verus (born Lucius Ceionius Commodus), A 'favorite' of the Emperor Hadrian and his adopted son and designated successor who was given the rank of Caesar. Aelius predeceased Hadrian and was 'replaced' by Antoninus Pius. This was probably for the best as Hadrian in his last years became a bit unbalanced and paranoid. The last years of Hadrian saw the re-introduction of treason trials and a brief 'reign of terror'.
Antoninus adopted both the young son of Aelius and his destined successor Marcus Aurelius, though only Marcus was given the rank of Caesar. Upon the death of Antoninus, Marcus while he might have appointed his 'brother' Lucius Verus as Caesar instead gave him full powers as Augustus and co-emperor. It was a mistake. Lucius Verus was a 'boob' of the first order and eventually 'partied' himself to death while out campaigning in the East. Probably trying to drink an amphora of wine in every village between Antioch and the Euphrates !
The photo is from that greatest of all 'Roman' period flicks ....... The Life of Brian
The 'true' embodiment of Verus ....... aka "Biggus" (Verily)
