My kind of 'junk' this Goldberg hoard you excavated. First century is always good to have and Nerva can be tough. I look for the real 'nose jobs'. This one is rather tame actually. Some of his sestertii have a 'schnase' on them that makes you wonder what the engravers were thinking. Seriously ..... nobody could have had one that big !

The hexagonal shape of the 'wound' makes me wonder if it is a countermark, although I don't see any corresponding flattening on the reverse. What do you think?

As IGE has said I also think it either was, or is bronze disease.

I doubt the countermark theory. Perhaps corrosion caused by being pressed next to something made of iron for 1800 years.

Looks like a treated bronze disease patch... looks like it might be gearing up for a come back too. might be worth giving it a quick round of treatment to be sure.

Its a nice coin though - the 'figure standing left' reverse type is usually no more than a sillhouette on the ones I've cleaned. When will we get a picture of the whole lot?

A picture of the whole lot? Hadn't planned on doing that but I guess I could. Right now I'm still trying to ID and attribute them all and put them in their own little baggies. Once I do that, maybe I'll take them all out for a group shot.

Even with the patch it's still a nice coin of one of the good emperors.
