Hmm. I didn't change the file name when I did the cropping and now both sets of the photos are identical.

PVC. The darkened part may be burning from being held under a naked flame.

Yep. This forum software will do that, if you try to upload files with the same filename on the same day. It does warn you on the Upload File page:

Important Note: Files with the same name uploaded on the same
day will overwrite the previous file without any further warning.

As for what has happened with your coin, I would guess environmental damage.

That is not PVC. It is verdigris.
