A nice surprise in the Goldberg lot. Beautiful portrait of Jupiter on a tiny coin.
Roman Republic, anonymous. 211-208 BC AR victoriatus Sicily mint? 15 mm, 3.2 gm Obv: laureate head of Jupiter right Rev: Victory standing right, erecting (crowning?) trophy. ROMA in exergue Ref: Crawford 67/1, BMC 137?
The reverse is celebrating a great victory over someone of some import. The time period is correct for the siege and fall of Syracuse. The end of 'Greek' Sicily
I checked other coins and pictures and didn't see any which had designs on the shield, although all of the coins I saw were fairly worn on the high spots, which could mask such detail.
Good theory about the battle. I'll go with that in the retelling.
