I am new to coin collecting and I have read some things on whizzed coins but I am unable to tell what they look like. Has the coin below been whizzed? Help! *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

It doesn't looked "whizzed" to me as you seem to have the same surface between the lettering that would show different appearance if the surface had been whizzed. Dipped more likely.

The seller has it listed as MS63 but I thought it had been altered and wasn't just BU UNC.

You are wise not to believe sellers on ebay. There are some honest ones (like me and others).Just be wary. The members of this forum will all be glad to answer your questions as long as photos are of the quality of this one. Nice pix. Even closer for rpm, DDO, DDR, overdates, WAM etc.

The luster pattern doesn't quite look like other whizzed coins that I have seen so while it could be whizzed, my lean is towards no. Even if it hasn't been whizzed, I think you are probably right about the coin having altered surfaces. It kind of looks like an AU that has been recolored to make it look like a MS RD coin.

Not whizzed; I see none of the damage one would associate with whizzing. The seller's white balance is so far off that no real conclusion can be made about the color. It could be a weak-strike MS or a slightly-circulated AU.

While the white balance is off, I am having a hard time imagining that it could be in another color other than some shade of orangey red but if that's the case, I think it is very unlikely the color can be original either as a MS or circulated coin. For a MS Red coin, the luster is quite poor. Given the light is shining from about 10:30, it should be reflecting off the flow lines and creating a band of light from about 8:30 to about 2:30. With an original red MS cent, it should be lustrous since there is no wear and very little brown toning that can dull the surfaces making the surfaces less reflective. If it's circulated, then it shouldn't have this orangey red color since the oils from people touching it should turn it mostly brown if not completely. Either way, I find it very hard to believe the color is original. I believe the coin has circulated since the face, neck, and fields have marks, light scratches, and light hairlines that I think are most likely to have come from circulation.

Looks like AU to me.
The hair shows wear.

Added some kind of filter to make it look more orange.

Usually a Wizzed coin has lines on it from a brush of some type. It is unusual that a coin of that age with those minor markings from posible cirulation has absolutely no dirt inbetween parts of the letters or numbers. Due to the sharp details though I'd still say a MS grade.

It looks like it might be in a TPG holder... is the seller calling it a MS63 or is it listed as an NGC or PCGS MS63? There is a big difference between the 2...

FWIW, that looks like a PCGS gasket. Dipped means a weak acid that removes a few nanometers of metal from the surface. Done once it removes the corrosion products at the surface and only some of the metal (still enough to show under a microscope and kill the value of the coin). Whizzing is a metal brush in a Dremel or similar tool. This too removes surface corrosion but leaves telltale lines at magnification. These are whizzed - see how all the scratches go in the exact same direction? It shows up when you rock the coin back & forth or under a microscope... and
