Referring to LMC's, there are several really valuable errors and varieties. However, are they only valuable in good condition? I've pulled some pennies with the right date/mintmark, but in really bad shape. I'm wondering if I should even bother to check for these variations if the penny overall is in really bad shape? Should I only bother if there's a chance at grade 40 or higher?

That being said, if I pull a roll of uncirc 2012-2013 pennies, should I be looking for variations in that instead of the known ones on older, poor condition pennies?

I am a roll searcher. An error or a variety will have a catalog value higher then a normal coin. The value will be based on condition, the higher the condition the higher the value. If you are looking through rolls of present year coins you should look for known errors/varieties as well as any new "discovery pieces". Keep in mind that listed catalog values are almost always higher then what you would get if you tried to sell. Good luck with your hunt.

Superhal,
By all means continue to check and to save these cents. Over time you will have
an assembly of errors to compare for even slighter, additional variations. Who knows, you may discover an error previously overlooked.
By studying these low grade coins, when a higher grade comes along you will spot it quicker than you do now.
