Hello
I have recently been given a coin by a family member and am unsure of its origin. I have been researching online and have found that it is most likely Greek, and has something to do with Ptolemy II.

Though, when looking online there are coins that are very similar to mine, though often the eagle is facing the wrong way or the two words are on the wrong sides of the eagle.
(on mine the "baziae" word is on right, and the others on the left, though looking online these are often opposite sides)

So basically what I am asking is if anyone knows when and where this coin is from, and possibly it's worth? and any other additional information.

I have attached pictures to the post, but the coin is very heavy (55g), about 37mm in diameter and is very thick (around 5mm). On one side is a bearded man (some sources say Zeus?) and on the other is an eagle with two words in Greek I believe.

Thanks very much
Dan

Hello and welcome.

It is indeed a Ptolemaic bronze. Your Greek words are "basileos" on the right and "ptolemaiou" on the left - King Ptolemy. This does not help much with ID, however, since there were over a dozen kings named Ptolemy in this dynasty.

I have found this website invaluable in telling apart the various coinage issues of the various Ptolemies. I'm thinking Ptolemy III might be your best match.

Thank you, I shall look on that site.

If it helps at all there appears to be an "E" between the eagles legs.

I was thinking Ptolemy IV, the item near its right shoulder is a cornucopia.

Thank you, and by looking at coins online it looks most like it may be IV, though they are similar there always seems to be small differences (eagle facing the wrong way, words in different order)

i just attributed one I purchased recently using this page, very nice...i think TIF pointed it out to me.

http://www.megagem.com/ancient/ptolemy_series.html

if that is an "E" below the eagle, it is the same as mine, a ptolemy iii "alexandria epsiolon and lambda series" coin, sv974 (E variant).

nice coin by the way!
