While doing my usual lurking around I spotted this coin: 1960 Lincoln Cent DDO FS-101 Large/Small Date (FS-025) PCGS Proof-68 RD on GreatCollections. Thinking that this may be a diamond-in-the-rough with an opening bid of $250, I looked up the cert number on PCGS...trend value....$2500. I had to take a second look and sure enough, with a population of two. I took a stab at it and was overcome by another bidder for less than 1/5 of trends.

Is this coin over-hyped, or did someone get a great deal?

I think you were lucky to be overbid, the 2500 price sounds like pure fantasy.

I'd look at pcgs and the coin facts to see the population and current prices that a coin like this fetched.

You can find a coin like this in MS for about 1/10th of that, in MS-63 to MS-65.

Great Collections start coins low, but it is a matter of time before they go through the roof.

I HIGHLY suggest reading the auction rules. SOME of the auction houses allow the owner of the coin, or the staff of the auction house to bid on coins. If the owner of the coin wins the auction, he simply pays the auction fee. Its stupid on some of the ways they do insider bidding to ramp up the cost and make more commissions. I know TELETRADE has done that in the past but I don't know if GC does it or not.

The $2500 is where I got the value, PCGS Trends, unless it is a typo across the board for this coin in the grades listed.

As far as outrageouos starting bids, GreatCollections has a 1865 Indian cent RPD FS-303 S-3 (FS-007.5) PCGS AU-58(PCGS Trends value of $250) with an opening bid of $750...and someone bid that!
