As predicted, this 1962 bag is definitely different. I have been going through it slowly. This pass is just for the obverse's and I will do reverse on another pass.

So, I pull out the first handful of coins from the bag, and I get a decent looking coin, what I call a typical 1962 date. Pretty skinny and clean.

Then the next coin I look at is WAY fatter date. I have to look for any tell tale signs there may be doubling, but to me there isn't anything too obvious.

I dug through the rolls and found a few of the extreme fatboys;

TADA ! and the winner is.....

Mind you, I have only gone through a handful or two of these coins at this point, and other coins show "issues" like the following images.

There are a TON of the In God We Trust that have that shadowy style ghostly image around the letters. The only example I can use to try to explain it, would be as if some one took a letter and dropped it about chest high into sand, the letter you can see easily, but there is this fat<?> hilly sort of sand pile edging on the outside of the coin. Some are so definitive that the entire "G" is clearly outlined. Its crazy. Its not the typical Machine Doubling I am used to seeing. It may simply be there because the coins were hit super strong.

I would say I am about 1,000 coins done, and I have a just over 3 rolls of "issues".

Anyone recognize any of these issues so I can eventually sort out this madness on pass # 2?

A couple things can make devices get fatter. One is a doubled die, but also die wear can make the devices get fatter. The second image looks like die wear if the reason for its corpulent look.

On a doubled die you should see some spread. On the 1962's there are a lot of doubled dies on the dates:

2 of the 3 examples are proof, so I doubt those dies will apply to a MS bag of 1962's. I don't know whats up with this bag, there are definitely 3-6 different types of dies, and only one - the one that has almost all Red-Browns is the clearest "normal" penny. The fat 62 (2nd pic) is NOT the fattest of them all. If I find the biggest one I will add it to the post.

I have several of these that have what I have to call as an extra part of letter on the coin itself. Like on the next to last picture, the trust with the arrows. That last "T", the top horizontal bar of the "T" is one level higher, it as if the extra metal imbedded in the die finally let go and it landed on that coin. I have one other like that, and that one happened to the "R" in trust.

If the date gets any bigger, the numbers would be touching. Then it may look like a distorted clay date hit by a rolling pin...........

You might like to look at coppercoins for examples of doubled dies for this year. This might help you to identify what is know so far on the 1962's?

Also on TRUST you can see Machine Doubling on the outside edges of the devices.

I added the two Fatboy pics above for clarity against the others. The "9" and "2" of the last pic are "damaged", they are basically flat topped in some areas due to the size. The bottom part of the "2" is nearly double the size of a regular "2". That last Fatboy picture had to be bigger, otherwise the top of the "6" and bottom of the "9" would not fit. The size of the 3 smaller date pics are 804x363.... the Fattest needed to be set to 804x380 !

The bottom of the "T" 's show a light horizontal slash mark across the bottom for the most part. Those are back in the rolls for now, I'll look'em over when I do the 2nd pass.
