Hey everybody, I'm new here to coin community and also to the whole coin collecting scene.

Basically, I bought some 2013 gold sovereigns off Atkinsons and they came by nice and all sealed up in a tube with some paper on the top to prevent the coins from moving around. But under closer inspection I couldn't discern why there were these grooves on the surface of the coin. I've placed a picture on this post. I'm a bit concerned that the groove on the front will decrease the value of the coin even though I know that 2013 Gold Sovereigns are not really collected for their face value but rather the metal.

All in all, I was curious as to what these grooves entailed and if I should exchange the ones with these grooves for nice smooth ones, Atkinsons have said that if I am not happy with them I can exchange them so nothing is off the table.

Looking forward to hearing from you all soon :). Have a good day coinies. Is it coinies? Coin maestros? Coin men? Coin MEN!? I dunno maybe someone can tell me what the term is :P.

If you don't like it and the people who sold it to you are happy to exchange it, go ahead and exchange it.

I can't tell from the pics whether the "groove" is simple damage, or some kind of mint error. If it's an error, that might actually increase the value above melt value.

To give an example: Back in 2006 some Australian proof sets contained a coin that was wrongfully dated "2005". Nobody knew this error existed until a customer of one of the larger coin dealers in Australia complained and returned their set as defective. The dealer promptly made a search through their inventory and found five or six more "error" sets. But rather than returning them to the Mint as defective, the dealer marketed them as "errors". The sets containing the error are now worth many times more than "perfect" error-free sets.

The main thing I wanted to know was what exactly was this groove caused by, is there any sort of test that creates something like this?

to CCF.

After viewing your photo (could use a higher resolution photo) I am of the belief that your coin is actually a strike through error and not a scratch.
I used the nose as a focal point, and can clearly see no damage to the nose area, and had this been a deep scratch it would have damaged the nose also.

If this were my coin I would not return it unless it can be confirmed in a visual inspection to be damage from outside the mint.
