As some of you may know I decided to send in some of the coins that I have been posting here. I'm working on a "Everymans collection" registry set of EF45 to AU58 Walking Liberty's. I'm already well over half way to an MS66+/67 Short set so I wanted to try something different. On a few coins I posted here the grades ranged from VF30 to AU53 so I needed to see what the "pros" say. I joined Sunday and sent the package today.
For others thinking of sending coins in I learned something today. I arrived at the post office with the package ready to go. PCGS suggests sending Registered and insured. As I handed the package over (that was really tough with 20 of my babies inside) the lady said you can't mail a package with shinny tape on it. I had use packing tape to seal the box. She said they don't allow that with registered mail. I fully expected her to send me on my way. Instead she got out a grocery bag and the two of us wrapped the package and used paper tape that she supplied. In all it took over 10 minutes. I told her over and over how nice it was of her to help. The USPS went above and beyond the call of duty today. I will post the results in about 3-4 weeks. I sure hope the VF30 guys were wrong. If they come back that low I will need to rethink this collection.

Quote: That is a lot of dough down at one time Yes it is but I was buying coins as AU50 to AU55 and people were grading them VF30-AU53. I need to get an idea of accurate grades before I consider going any further with this collection. I know PCGS is not perfect but with 3 people viewing them I should be a little better idea.

I was wondering if you could post a list of the coins that were submitted.
I encounter the same problem the first time I submitted to PCGS via registered. Luckily, the guy behind the counter had a roll of paper tape and a wet sponge so I could cover up all the plastic tape. I found out that day that only paper tape is allowed. I guess it is so they can stamp over the seams and to make any tampering more visible. Anyways, good luck with your submission.

Quote: I guess it is so they can stamp over the seams and to make any tampering more visible. That (she stamped the entire edge of every piece of tape) and she said the shinny packing tape is not strong enough. Here is the list. I didn't post all of these because after getting VF on the first ones I got a little down. WLH's: (I bought all of these as AU50 to AU58. I couldn't pass up the S mints) 1916D 1917 1918S 1920S 1933S 1934S 1935S 1936S 1939S I had two 1942 MS65ish and one 1945D 65ish sitting around so I sent those too. Those are two coins I don't have in my high grade Short Set so these will be filler coins until I find MS67's. The shipping was going to be $62 ($31 both ways) with or without these 3 so they went along. It brings down the cost per coin. Peace dollars: (These were all bought as MS62-64) 1922D 1923 1923S 1924 1925 1926 1926S 1928S (the one I have my fingers crossed on) All of these will go in my Peace dollar registry set. I'm not looking for any awards with this set. I will have mainly MS63/64 coins in this set. I plan to post the results in a month or so. Because some of the coins are well over the $300 limit I did the regular service level. If they all come back "details" or EF you may not hear from me again If that 28S Peace dollar comes back MS63 or MS64 then

LOL on the plastic tape ... I made the same exact mistake on my first submittal to PCGS years ago ... and wonderfully received the same level of support at the post office that you report. Best of wishes on the submittal ... agreed that PCGS is not 'perfect' ... but in general their professional graders get way more correct than they get wrong ... despite my objections on occasion to individual coins. Looking forward to your follow-on report of results. David

Quote: LOL on the plastic tape I did a search for a thread on submitting to PCGS and didn't find anything about the correct tape to use. I guess it is live and learn one person at a time. I hope someone sees my post and gets it right. I also posted my story because I think the postal service takes a beating even though they do a great job 99.9% of the time.

The results are looking good so far. I can't wait to see the rest of them and I hope they also graded well.

Have you checked the PCGS website for updates? It's only been two weeks...but you never know. Quote: I need a "Smilies" chewing on his finger nails.

That is the smiles I was looking for. I posted 3 of them so far. A guy took a round about shot at my photo skills so I think I am done posting photos on this forum. I got really mixed results. As others who have sent in AU type coins have seen the scores are all over the place. When you compare to already slabbed coins things don't always match up. I'm guessing there is something they see that I don't. I'm in the beginning/learning part of the game right now. I do this as a hobby so I expect it to cost me money not make me money. 1916D Came back AU55. I thought AU53 at best. 1917 Came back AU58. That is what I thought. 1918S Came back AU 50. I was hoping the weak strike S mint would get this a 53. From other 53/55's I have seen I will take mine. 1920S Came back EF45. This hurt a little. I bought it as an AU50 and this is one that has a pretty wide cost range from EF to AU. Again I would rather have this one then some of the AU50's that are out there. 1933S Came back AU53. I was pulling for 55. 1934S Came back AU50. This was the biggest surprise. I bought it as an AU55+. I have to use this as a research piece to see what happened. It has great luster so they must have seen it as a strong strike that had a lot of wear and I saw it as a weak S mint that would grade higher. 1935S Came back AU50. I thought it was EF45 so this was good to see. 1936S Came back AU55 as guessed. Bought as 58. 1939S Came back AU55 as guessed. Bought as 58. As for the 1926S and 1928S Peace dollars those were the biggest surprise. What I saw as bag marks they saw as wear and gave both AU58's. Bad news I overpayed for them. Good news I have great looking AU58's in my Everyman's Collection Registry set. In the end I am glad I sent everything in. Going forward I will buy fewer raw coins. I know there are some here that swear by their grading abilities, but I will not leave it on my kids to take coins into a dealer and be told everything is average at best when they are really AU+. At least in a slab there is a history of price. I don't think it is going to get cheaper to slab in the future and I think people are getting tired of over grading by dealers so more and more coins are going in.

Thanks for posting your grading results. I like hearing "real person" stories of grading. I hope you don't mind me saying so, but it doesn't sound to me as if you had mixed results, on the Walkers at least. With only one exception, you were within one grade of PCGS. The other one was two grades off, but still in the AU category. It seems like your grading and PCGS's are within pretty good agreement. You mentioned two Peace dollars that you hoped would go MS, but went AU. How did the other Peace dollars do?

Quote:How did the other Peace dollars do? They all came back MS62 to MS63. Except the 1924 came back MS64. I had thought one of the others was MS64 and the 1924 was MS63 so it worked out. They were not worth grading but I needed them for a basic registry set and didn't feel like buying more UNC Peace dollars. I only say mixed results because side by side a couple coins do not look AU50 vs AU55. The ones that were higher priced went to AU50 and the more common ones went to AU55. Makes you wonder if they think about rarity as they decide between grades. I need to spend time looking at wear vs strike.
