I spotted a Philip I SAECVLARES for just 19 squids and then looked about and the seller also had an Otacilia Severa with the legend 'MILLIARVM SAECVLVM' (roughly, 1000 year secular games) and an uninscribed cippus. Thats the copper cippus done with..im wondering how thick the patina is, it looks pretty fragile (although of good colour) and may be worth 'smoothing' a bit or dealing with the flaking parts. more "cos iii" pilars, those are pretty cool ben.
so what does the "cos iii" mean? year 3? some of the denari I picked up recently have "cos iii and iiii" on them.

Cos III refers to the regnal year... it means that Philip had been emperor for 3 years. This year corresponds to 1000AUC. Well...I say emperor, it actually means Consul, a different office, but in practice it doesn't make a difference by this period.
On your denarii it will be the regnal year of that emperor (or empress consort) - you should be able to get it pretty close to the minting date using this system (you can sometimes get closer than +-0.5 years when new titles are added or commemoratives are issued...). But be warned...you have to see the first letter of the next word to be sure - a lot of designs appear again with very similar dies but for the next regnal year.

Hello Ben, Thank you for your purchases.  Regarding the As, the Patina is tough, with some scuffs as seen in the photos. Also no "flakiness". I do not think it can be "improved", with Wax, for example, but then, I do not own it now.  |

The copper is nice and not at all flakey. I waxed it to give it a bit more protection anyway. The silver one had some gunk adhered to it on the obverse which you can see on the pictures which came off easily. Looks to be a polishing compound. The blank cippus is really rough but fills the hole. All together, a very good purchase at a really good price. Thanks Masis! Heres all my Cippuses now:  |

I prefer to do this with coins, unless it is making the coin un-attributable, then I leave the dusty stuff on. I don't think the person I bought it from polished it with a compound either. Whatever you do, please DON'T smooth it! Smoothing is a big no-no that too many people ignore. :(

By the way, COS III refers to Philip I's third consulship, not for three years as consul or, as Ben pointed out, not his third regnal year either. Your coins were part of Philip's 10 emission, so they were struck in A.D. 249.

I remember last year I had a reseller buy a coin from me, he left Feedback only when he sold the coin. Lame.  This year I had one reseller buy a Tetrarch AE Radiate at £4.99. Not getting any Feedback from him, I checked his profile and saw he had it for sale. He took it and a few other Roman LRB's he'd bought to a "Jewellers" to get them polished (with Boot polish it looked) and he waffled in his listing as if doing this was a positive, stripping coins of their Patina. I think it also sold for £4.99 (before Fees). It is standard for me, and ought to be for most ebay sellers, to notify the Buyer by the message system, when their item is Dispatched. Up until that reseller bought from me, he never did that, so then he must have thought "that's a good idea"  and added that waffle info to his listing "message sent on dispatch" and "iam a good seller". (Not sure what "iam" is , unless he meant a Yam, and as part of an Equal Opportunities Policy he hired a Root Vegetable to help out in his sales.  ) On a serious note, Feedback, as far as ebay is concerned, is official closure on a transaction. As it stands, as far as they are concerned, the coins Ben bought could still be deemd by them as "not received".  Of course, I do not think there is any ebay seller who has been given Feedback for every single item they have sold. |

The coin he is selling looks different then the same coin you sold him, why the color difference?

I really need to get one of these Secular Games commemoratives. I have wanted one for a long time but they always seem to elude me.
Of the four coins I would want the bottom left....
