Went to the Post Office today and bought some stamps. My change was 2 1966 quarters and a 1969 quarter. Those things are still circulating today, 47 years later. See why it makes sense using dollar coins and getting rid of the dollar bill? Look how long these last in circulation!

My bet is 30 years from now those same coins will still be circulating.

I did too. As long as they are worth face and nothing more, they will remain in circulation. For proof of this, go out and buy a few rolls of quarters. They will always have ones from the 60s and early 70s.

Which strongly proves dollar coins will save money once dollar bill production is ceased.

TheForce, I knew that was where you were headed. I fully agree that dollar coins would save us all. I have also noticed that the current post 65 coins show very little wear compared to the silver coins. I bet some would still look fine over 100 years down the road.

However, 1987 loonies are all pretty beat-up... But they are intact, and it's only the ARP that's culling them.

Nothing special by any means, I thought it was interesting getting these at the same time. Common coins I get all the time but never together like this.

Good idea, but dollar coins are would simply add too much weight to your wallet as opposed to bills.

Yes, just imagine the extra weight in your pocket. In Canada, underground subway tunnels actually cave in 15% more quickly because of the heavy dollar coins weighing down all the pedestrians above, and I have to buy a new pair of shoes every month. Cashiers regularly get carpal tunnel from handling these heavy coins all day, which obviously leads to union riots and pay raises for working with dangerous material. And I haven't even mentioned the skinny-jeans explosions that claim almost 200 lives annually!

Forget the dollar coin, America. It isn't worth it.

I blame the toonie of the reasons stated above.

I never have more then 2-3 dollar bills in my wallet and any given time. Having a dollar coin in my pocket or even 2 would not be to bad. Some day we will take a two steps forward in the US. We will adopt the metric system (since very few people even know the conversions within our current system - cups, pints, qts, gallons, inches, feet, yards, miles etc....) and we will get rid of the dollar bill. I hope I live to see the day.

I can sympathize with nala. I've broken countless pairs of work boots from all the toonies I have to lug to Tim Hortons everyday for the boys. We're actually 15% fitter from all the commerce we do.

(When did they get rid of the apostrophe on Hortons? Now it's more than one Tim plural?)
