I have started contacting sellers on ebay about their shipping and packing methods before placing a bid or BIN. It's sad this is now necessary but I have been getting too many coins that are not packed the way they should. Just having loose coins wrapped in paper and stuffed in a regular envelope is not satisfactory. Envelopes are OK if there is some stiff cardboard in there and coins are in flips. Does anyone else contact sellers about this before bidding?

If the seller does not state how the coins will be shipped, I will and have contacted them for the details. I too have received coins that have been badly packaged and it gives me a pit in my stomach until the coin has been fully inspected to make sure it has not damaged and to make sure it is the coin I paid for.

When I was on ebay, and high bidder on what I considered rare coins or currency, I would contact the seller before making payment (PayPal was not mandatory at the time) and request the total due to pack with extra care and send via registered mail.

I found that the sellers were more than happy to work with me.

I see no reason not to do this, as long as your tone is appropriately respectful. Not everyone packs like "you're gonna need a Sawzall to get to this coin" like I do.
