This one is just passing through my hands. I bought it as the designated shopper for my friend, one of the last coins for his budgeted collection.

I picked one of these for his little collection because

a) I see them at every auction and they always sell
b) they always seem to sell for high prices
c) I was able to get this one for a decent price
d) this one had really good detail for the price, relatively speaking
e) it's a little bit naughty and funny

He loved it. I don't have one for my collection but wouldn't mind getting one someday. There are many other things I'd rather have for the money though.

THRACE. Thasos. Stater (Circa 500-480 BC).
Obv: Nude Satyr rushing right, carrying off protesting nymph.
Rev: Quadripartite incuse square.
23 mm, 7.9 gm
SNG Copenhagen 1010.

Edited to add: wildwinds shows the date range for SNG Cop 1010 as 525-463 BC

Was wondering about the history of this iconography, found good info on the 'satyr abducting nymph' coins on this page:

I caught our own Dancing Banana abducting Miss Orange!

Thrace,-Thasos.-Satyr-Abducting-Nymph.

(wish someone with animation skills would make a tiny animated gif mimicking the satyr abduction coin)

TIF- this is one of my favorite coin types! I consider it one of my "prettiest" coins. Many photo redos are in order for me.

Hey, my coin picture disappeared.

Seriously? We can't show that coin on CCF?! Can I just blur out the offending organ?

The nymph seems to be acting with gay abandonment.
Whoopee!
Perhaps the die cutters had trouble depicting protest or fright.

The hand position on these coins throws puzzles me. The nymph's hand right hand is always turned palm facing herself, or the viewer. If you were raising your hand in protest or otherwise trying to free yourself from such a captor, wouldn't your palm be turned towards him, swatting/pushing him away?

The hands on these coins are always rather poorly executed and creepy.

I have one of this type as well and call me a pervert but I always thought he was doing more than just carrying her.

This series does seem quite carnal though with satyrs masturbating etc. But that was the visceral nature of the culture at the time I guess (what else was there for these people other than food, violence and sex?)

I guess the sheer age of these coins is also appealing... its hard for us to comprehend that something 2500 years has survived and that we can hold it in our hands.
