The 3 letters on the left are ALL - it's not Allectus is it?

Nope, thats a Gallienus through and through. Its not a zoo series one so theres not much point in spending time pinning down the reverse. Allectus is a very unique design - the die cutters were trained from scratch from locals by Carausius, inherited by Allectus and then went their seperate ways from that point on, so no other ruler could have similar coinage to him (some carausian coins look really like Allectus towards the end).

That would probably make it Gallienus.

LOL! It's pretty obvious now I have been told, thanks guys Just on a side note, if there are any coins I post that anyone takes a shine too, please let me know - coins are made round to go round and I have more than enough to keep me busy for a while!

Sorry, another question.... what are these radiate coins classed as? Are they billon as they sound different when 'bounced' on the desk.

Huh, I seem to have taken a shine to everything on the table...
And they will have a teensy bit of silver in it but at this point its insignificant. Infact, id suspect the silver content of this would be purely accidental. They really disbased it by this point.

Quote: And they will have a teensy bit of silver in it but at this point its insignificant. Infact, id suspect the silver content of this would be purely accidental. Just remember, when Aurelian introduced his coinage reform that fixed the silver content at 1:20 (4.8% silver content), that was considered a significant improvement over coins of his immediate predecessors, such as this one. Technically they might still be "billon", but calling it "bronze" would not be metallurgically wrong. Quote: ...they sound different when 'bounced' on the desk. Careful you don't "bounce" them too hard. Some metals, especially silver, crystallize with age and become brittle. An ancient coin that would simply dent or bend when dropped hard way back when it was first made could easily break into pieces if given the same treatment today.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
