Agreed that I am a neophyte when it comes to bills ... so calling upon the kind CCF experts to address this question please.

I thought that all 'modern' FRN serial numbers that begin with '99' were produced as collector sheets of many bills put together ... although legal tender they were not really intended for public distribution.

Today at my local bank I received a Series 2006 $100 note ... serial number HL 99076624 E

Question ... is this an example somehow cut from a collector sheet, or did the BEP begin public distribution of '99' serial numbers?

Appreciate any input ...

David

I checked the BEP site and they don't sell sheets of one hundred dollar bills. They stop at fifties.

You are mostly right about the starting 99s. For 1s though 20s the serial numbers top out at 96 mil. That equals 15 runs of 200,000 sheets of 32 bills for a total of 6.4 million bills per run. 6.4 mil times 15 equals 96 mil.

However with 50s and 100s and stars of any denomination they only print 100,000 sheets per run for 3.2 million bills per run. So after 30 runs you reach 96 mil. There is room for one more run of 3.2 mil for a total of 31 runs. So the maximum serial for those is 99.2 mil

So the bill you have pictured falls within the serial number range. Not sure how LEPE is going to affect this though.

Very informative I thought all the serial numbers for circulation ended at 96 as well.
