I was pulling some 1964 cents out to send in to PCGS for grading and the cent on the right hand side looked pretty interesting. I'm sure it is just some sort of film on the coin hiding the luster of the mirror finish. There is no way I am lucky enough to find a 1964 SMS cent plus the picture posted on PCGS appears to have a much deeper satin finish.

It looks like a nice business strike. Probably from fresh dies.

Condor,

It is possible they mixed them up some how at the mint since the proof and business coins were both struck at the same mint through 1964. This coin was definitely pulled from a proof set. Is there any design differences on the devices that you are aware of between the proof and business strikes? I have a couple rolls of uncirculated 1964 business strikes and they have much more luster.

Did YOU pull it from a proof set?

Design difference? None that I know of. What do the edges look like? The edges of a proof should be flat and square and the edge meets the rim a a sharp 90 degree corner all the way around the coin. This also makes the coin look unusually thick. The edge is also somewhat mirror like.

Any more opinions on this coin on the right? I found one that looks like it with the satin type finish and the proof rims.

Looks exactly like the '64 I found and suspect is SMS so I wouldn't discount your theory.

Very nice find.. super jealous.. great looking coins.. the satin cent & quarter both look cameo .. can you get a cameo affect using a proof die on a satin planchet?

Here is a large image of the 1964 SMS quarter:

Click to enlarge to see die scratches.
The dies should be fresh and the strikes were very low, so the same die scratches should be present on each coin if they are the 1964 SMS quarters. If not, then they are not SMS quarters.
