I saw a few posts lately about VAMs, and I'm really into Morgans, so I though I'd get out the old Loupe and have a looksy at some of my Morgans. After examining three or four, I found a 1897-P which seems to have some characteristics of a VAM-8 (Doubled Left Stars & Phrygian Cap Top), according to this page at VAMworld:

http://vamworld.wikispaces.com/1897-P+VAM-8

This one is also listed on VAMworld as a "Hot 50 Morgan VAM".

Here's some pictures of mine. Hopefully the images aren't too large. Mine seems to have the double cap, double stars, and double letters on the obverse.

Whadda' ya' think? Is this a VAM-8, or am I just seeing things?!!?

Go easy... I'm a beginner at this, but I'm anxious to learn!!

Hey SuperDave... Thanks for the SuperFast response! This is kinda' fun!! I didn't know there were so many varieties of Morgans around. After looking at a few more, I haven't found any more "Hot 50"s, or even "Top 100"s, but I have identified a few more common VAMs and I've still got about 30 Morgans more to go!!

It's almost like hunting for treasure!! Not to mention, I'm learning a whole lot more about the finer details of Morgans!

BTW, any idea on the grade of the 1897-P? VAM value?

Thanks!

This one's a toughie. The reverse looks Mint State, the obverse does not. It's either AU50 or MS64. In MS64, an 1897-P is a $50-60 coin. Earlier this year, an attributed MS64 VAM-8 sold for almost $130.

Note, the Top 100 VAM's carry generally greater value than the Hot 50's. There are exceptions. And, to frustrate you even more, every single Morgan dollar has an assigned VAM number, so you've got to attribute all of them.

Jeez..... I spent at least 6 hours today, quickly pouring over my measly 40 or so Morgans just looking for "Hot 50"s or "Top 100"s!!

You mean I have to attribute them ALL?!!?!!

(yes, I suppose it can be done............)

I just purchased 100 more mixed date Morgans in at least VF condition. They should be arriving on Wednesday.

OK..... let's see if I got this right. I need to spend at least 10 minutes with each coin to determine VAM attributes (not including smoke and beer breaks). That's 100 coins. That's at least 1000 minutes. Divide by 60, that gives me over 16 hours of VAM fun!!! Not to mention the other 40 or so I already have that I have to look at again!

Oh me, Oh my!!! I've got my work cut out for me!!

Oh, don't worry..... I'll enjoy every minute of it!!

One question though...... should I bother with a VAM on anything less than an AU?

Thanks!!!

BTW, this 1893-P (which you've seen before) is a VAM-5!!

1897-P-VAM-8??-Or-Just-My-Imagination.....

See........ I'm learning!!!!

Start here:

http://vamworld.wikispaces.com/

All the information you want about *any* VAM is at VAMworld, as you might have already found out. That's my home away from home concerning VAM's. A Vamworld tab is open whenever I am online. Now, about condition - there are a couple of rarer VAM's for which an Uncirculated example hasn't been found yet, and many which count only one or two high-grade examples. For example, an 1878-P VAM-44 in XF40 sold for over $2500.

Three years ago.

Familiarize yourself, as you seem to be doing, with the Top 100, Hot 50 and Elite Clashed Morgans. There are still others of value - 1921-D's are becoming a pretty hot item - but that'll be a start.
