Should I move the location of my lights?
In the last three sets of pictures, they were at 4 and 10.

I'm not sure if I will be able to do much better than this. I am still absolutely blown away by the fact that changing my lighting has improved my pictures tenfold. I am always open to suggestions though. What could be improved? (Looking at the pictures again, I think the yellow balance is still off a bit)

I'm surprised at the quality of the details in these pics. I was not expecting good sharpness in the closeup, but it's there. That said, the biggest problem I see is the images seem to be generally over-exposed. Do you have any control over exposure with the phone camera app? What you're looking for is to keep any highlights from over-exposing, and to do this you need to make a faster shutter speed, a smaller aperture (larger f-number), smaller ISO, etc. You may try even more diffusion to help with this. Move the tissue farther from the light (make a bigger ball) and you will increase your diffusion level. Keeping it really close to the light minimizes the effective diffusion...Ray

Thanks Ray, There's no way to change aperture, shutter speed or ISO. I will adjust the tissue paper so it's a bit farther away from the lights, and post the results. I am also going to try and use the "HDR" feature on the phone. http://www.macworld.com/article/115...eiphone.html

I adjusted the tissue paper, so that it's farther from the lights. Here is the difference between HDR and Regular pictures, using the Apple Camera App. I think I will use HDR from now on, for coin photography. The lighting seems a lot less harsh. These are Unedited pictures (Well, I cropped them slightly).

That's better from exposure perspective, with highlights not so blown-out. I'd bet a little more diffusion, and a little levels adjustment, and you'll be there...Ray

Thanks Ray, I'll admit, I don't have any experience with changing the Levels. Here are the options available in GIMP.

Anyone Like Macro Photography? iPhone + 10x Loupe. Full Size 100% Crop I had a really hard time with the toning, and it's not even close. I will need to practice some specific lighting techniques for Macro shots (Although, it's not about the toning with such close-up shots). Here is what the toning should look like.

You realize this is simply ludicrous from a phone camera, don't you? Toning is going to be especially difficult in detail imaging due to the inherent lighting compromises. No matter - toning isn't why you're creating those. Color is best illuminated axially, but I don't know if you're getting sufficient relief from the coin for an axial setup.

Quote: You realize this is simply ludicrous from a phone camera, don't you? Yep! I think that's why I keep trying to push the envelope. Although, I really don't know how much more I can do. The phone isn't even in a tripod, I'm just sitting it on top of a box, and holding a 10x loupe in front of the lens. I thought about axial lighting, after reading this thread: https://goccf.com/t/125365But, with such subtle toning, I would just end up washing out the luster for a bit of colour around the rim. Also, Happy New Year!

I would think any camera (phone, P&S, MILC, DSLR, whatever) can take advantage of lens stacking, and the final result will be defined more by the quality of the objective lens (10x loupe in this case) than the camera.
