HI everyone, as I have mentioned in a couple of previous threads, I recently got this Julia Domna in an uncleaned lot of denarii. However, as I have been cleaning it, the reddish encrustation has gradually come off to reveal that the silver in some parts of the coin is very thin. And so it is evident that much of my coin is copper with just a bit of silver over it. So based upon the pictures, does it seem that I have a fourree as opposed to a denarius? Thanks

It does look like a fouree, but at this time in history the silver content was reduced quite a bit. It could also be the result of environmental damage. With that large Cud on the edge I would guess it to be an unofficial issued and a fouree.

Thats a tricky one. The red encrustation neednt necessarily be copper. My very own julia domna is a highly debased billon example (unique!) which was encrusted in thick red clay, almost like it had been fired in terracotta.

Its hard to tell from the picture, but if you've hit elemental copper, its a fourree. Thickly plated - its either been worn a lot or the silver coat has filled some details. These things are pretty interesting - this looks to be official, which means some questionable behavior at the mint.
