Hi guys,

On ebay atm, I have 1250 late Roman coins listed at £3/$4.85 each and they are selling like hot cakes.
41 have sold through ebay and another 380 have sold 'privately' as a result of advert. When I first listed these I thought I may have been a little over the top so I gave the option for the perusing audience to send offers but 99% have paid full price, are more than happy and have asked to buy more of the same direct.
Is it possible that as collectors we are putting too small a price on the 'average' late Roman coinage items? Or is there some reason that British found stuff commands a better price to the British and US market?
I do have the relevant guides - David Sear volume 1-4 (is 5 out yet?) excellent for info and finding legends etc. but the price regime seems a bit all over the place.

Thoughts please

The dealer I have bought from in a past sells his uncleaned coins at $3.75, Semi-Cleaned coins at $4.25, and I think his cleaned coins were sold for around 5 bucks so you are offering a decent price.

Up until a few years ago lots of un-cleaned coins were cheap, since than they have doubled and tripled but the quality has stayed the same. Back than I would buy lots of 1000 coins for well under $1000, but now I see 250 coins going for that price.

As for your question: as far as I am aware, Sear is the only actual "price guide" for ancients; the other catalogues such as RIC and ERICII don't give prices, since they are primarily reference catalogues.

The only other "price guide" I'm aware of, which uses prices realised from both ebay and other auctions, is Wildwinds. It's hit-and-miss, since much of their data is getting old now.

Sear's is a great reference only. Not for "real prices".
When I check a coin in Sear's, then look at the "value" I divide it around the number 4 to get a more realistic price.
Yes, on ebay the realisation prices are often a fraction of reference book prices.

Dont forget you are a newcomer to the hobby and with a huge stock it cant all be checked - I'm sure your pictures will include a lot of rare and nice coinage which only the well seasoned collectors would spot. After all, you've been churning out quadrans on this forum and some of them are worth ridiculous money.

Coins are only worth what somebody else is prepared to pay for them on a given day. Your best place to sell is ebay but prices achieved will differ hugely and often mysteriously! ebay is also the best place to value coins, all the books are way out.

'Rare' does not always equate to valuable and low quality 'rare' are still hard to sell. Put a link to your auctions in your signature, would like to look at them.
