Supposed to be from the time of Pontius Pilate.

Looks like a real but tooled prutah, issued by Judaean procurator Pontius Pilate, under Tiberius, AD 30/31. 'LIZ' is the date. The Z is blundered (is the correct term 'retrograde'?)-- I haven't seen that before but perhaps it is a known thing?

Here's a good site for Roman Procurator prutot: http://www.amuseum.org/book/page12.html

In general, the coin is very worn and irregular yet some of the devices appear very sharp-- too sharp in context of the state of the rest of the coin, plus there are various scratches/gouges. For those reasons I think it has been 'tooled', i.e., metal removed around the devices to make them appear more prominent.

I could be wrong of course. It would be the first time this year month day hour.

Whew, I'm on a work-related trip far from home and am POOPED! Meeting just finished, now time for dinner and a show and then ~2 hours of sleep before heading to the airport for a long long trip home. Looks like I'll miss entering this Smackdown :(

On the bright side... Vegas, baby!

The devices are too sharp based on the overall wear of the coin. Therefore it appears that someone came along and cut around them to sharpen the details.

Sellers info is that it is 26-36 AD. I will label it as "tooled" thanks everybody.

Pish-- the date range is for Pilate's tenure as procurator (actually, might have been a prefecture rather than procuratorship).

LIZ is the date this coin was issued, regnal year 54, which correlates to CE 30/31. This is the sought after date of Pilate coins because it was presumably issued just prior to/during the crucifixion.

There are known issues with a retrograde Z. Check CNG's archives.

Agree with Dutch-- even tooled, a great coin to have!
