I think I see some Machine Doubling on it. The T in Utah, and the word Liberty. All shifted north.

what is the reason for part of the coin being lighter/darker around the images (looks almost like another image present)?

Sorry, all I see is the glare and shadow of the lighting. I don't even see Machine Doubling.

the dark/light part on the coin is part of the coin - no shadowing. I used a scanner to take the pics and have tried gently rubbing the coin with a qtip to see if the "shadowing" or what I thought was "dust" to come off but it didn't? and there appears to be some scratches or gouges in/around the darker areas (maybe just PMD?) also, at the edge of the bust and on the "B" from liberty, possible die breaks or something else? (I am still learning so I have a hard time verbalizing what I am seeing without sounding like a complete idiot!) Maybe there is nothing significant - just looked odd to me so thought I would post. thanks for looking.

The date 1896 is MD. The darker area was an excess of grease and grit on the die.

And there's also a Die Chip (Broken Post) in the "B" of "LIBERTY".

I see what you're asking about. The fields have dark patches. If these are like coins I have it's Struck Through Grease. It isn't enough to cause the design to be affected, but it is enough to cause these dark areas. I only saved a couple of coins with the same look as your coin and sent the others back into circulation. Does anyone know if this type of grease strike demands any premium? I've seen it on lots of coins.

The dark areas are from being struck through a "thin" layer of grease as opposed to a standers Struck Through Grease, or a layer of oil.No added value in this case. John1
