I recently found a Henry VIII Gold coin.... I believe it's a Gold Crown of the Double Rose.

The coin needs to be straightend... any advice on that very welcome!

Very nice Chris

just a few pointers if you don't mind Chris

it may help your detecting hit rate,

I drag a chain and work the chain marks

it help as it keeps me straight and I can work up to the chain marks on the ground and I can see where I've been,

also I overlap each swing nose to heel

I may not cover as much ground

but I do know I got most of what is in it.

Cheers mate and good hunting

Cheers Harry

I'm normally very thorough but to be honest I was just trialling the chest mount so was more interested in camera angles etc.... I was not expecting to find anything so was whizzing around :) just shows how unpredictable this hobby can be :)

Not sure how to straighten a coin THIS bent.
I would perhaps seek some professional advice over the 'phone from a leading museum, before proceeding. There is real value here which has to be considered, as to how to straighten it.

For a less bent coin, I have put it between two pieces of very stiff rubber, and flattened it in a vice.

The fact that it is gold will make it less subject splitting.

Don't know how the current Laws relating to treasure trove found in the U.K., work. The museum should be able to advise. I feel sure that if you follow the Law properly, you are more likely to keep this piece for yourself.

No treasure law for single coin, only 10 or more found together ....... doesn't matter that its gold as the law doesn't refer to gold/silver single coins or up to 9, just artefacts over 300years old with precious metal content. I would submit it through portable antiquities scheme anyway for them to record and you will get a full ID and the coin returned, most likely with the number of a coin restorer who will make the coin worth 10 times the amount! Nice find....I found 1600 Roman bronzes a few years ago...that was treasure act, but were all returned to me anyway by the museum.

What part of the country did you find that? Not the exact local obviously lol.

Regards,

Met.
