That is what I would like to know.
apparently the silver clad came with either no mint mark or a "S" mint mark

the copper nickel clad came in NMM (philly) Denver and San Fran.

All silver clad were S mint marks.

If the coin has an S mint mark and is UNC it is silver.

If the coin has an S mint mark and is Proof it can be either silver or copper nickel clad.

Let me try to explain again.
Circulation '76 halves were made at Philadelphia (NMM) and Denver (D)
San Francisco made three types of halves
1. Uncirculated (non-proof) collectors coins -- all of these were 40% silver clad.
2. Proof 40% Silver coins
3. Proof copper-nickel clad coins
So what jack jeckel said is true. All silver coins are S mint mark. If it is an S proof, however, it may or may not be silver.

No it doesn't. Just because all silver clad are S mint, it does not follow that all S mint coins are silver clad.

If you are unsure of composition being clad or silver, just perform the tissue test.
