Belgian 10 Centimes 1894, copper-nickel.

The elder type (designed by Braemt) was being used since the 1860's. We've left behind the 'holed' 5, 10 and 25 centimes in the 20th century.

A silver 1894 Romanian 2 Lei (Singular 'Leu'). 1894 is the only year of issue which is not rare, but even then mintage was relatively low (600K).

Romania must be the 'European equivalent' of Brazil when it comes to persistent long term money debasement and high- or hyper-inflation. The currency still is called the 'Leu', but meanwhile it's the fourth one. After the first Leu got off the gold standard, eventually (silver) coins up to 100,000 Lei were issued in 1946. The second Leu was shortlived (1947-1952), whereas the third survived the communist dictator 'Ceaucescu'. In 2005, four zeroes were dropped when the fourth Leu was introduced.

2 Heller, Austro-Hungarian Empire. Bad pictures. This coin probably came over from Bohemia to the US with my great-grandparents.

1893 Silver threepence from Great Britain. This is the year the Jubilee Head was replaced by the Veiled Head portrait of Queen Victoria. Jubilee Head threepences of 1893 are much scarcer than Veiled Head ones. The Jubilee Head was unpopular as people thought the Queen's crown looked ridiculously small and was about to topple off!
