1887 Jubilee Head sixpences - Withdrawn and Revised types:

How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go?-Second-Edition!-Ended-At-1492-Waiting-On-1491

The British Royal Mint made the same mistake in 1887 that the Philadelphia Mint had made 4 years earlier. They redesigned the sixpence, but didn't put the value on the reverse. Many people started gilding sixpences and passing them off as half sovereigns, so the coin was withdrawn and given a new reverse - a crowned 'SIX PENCE' in a wreath, very similar to the reverse of the Wiliam IV and Victoria Young Head sixpences.

In 1887 the first coins were minted for Congo Free State. The silver 1 Franc coin was one of them. Hereby one last coin from the heart of Africa:
