For France, 1870 certainly was a year of turmoil. It started the year as the French Empire under Napoleon III. After the defeat in the short Franco-Prussian war, Napoleon III was ousted and left in exile. It meant the start of the third republic. Translated into coinage, that implies a flurry of silver 5 Francs coins, starting with the 1870 imperial 5 Francs, featuring Napoleon III, shown by NumisRob above. http://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces1184.htmlNext, a failed attempt to bring his (underaged) son to power as Napoleon IV (very rare). Subsequently, the third republic couldn't decide on what design to choose. The Ceres design (dating from the second republic and used on smaller denominations) has been tried in two versions: with the national motto "Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité" (only in 1870): http://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces1186.html and without the motto (in 1870 and 1871): http://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces1185.html  Ultimately the 'classic design' with the Hercules group also was minted. That design would be continued. Only the French Empire 'Napoleon III' 5 Francs is very common. The one without the motto is pretty tough; its Bordeaux (K) issue is less rare (544 K minted). The 5 Francs with the motto is more common (1.18 M minted in Paris). The smallest Belgian coin for 1869. One Centime (copper, 2g). In other countries of the Latin Monetary Union, the weight of copper coins had been reduced. Tbe Belgian mint chose to replace the larger coppers and the smallest silver (20 ct) by nickel-copper coinage (a primary for that time). The size and weight of the small coppers was left unchanged.
