Austrian Netherlands, Half Ducaton 1753, the obverse pictures Empress Maria Theresia. The Ducaton and its fractions were minted in above Sterling fineness.   |

FRANCISCUS DEO GRATIA ROMANORUM IMPERIUM SEMPER AUGUSTUS GERMANIAE HIEROSOLYMUM REX Francis, By the Grace of God ever lasting emperor of the holy Roman empire and King of Germany and Jerusalem  April 1966: Some time ago a correspondent to the 'Australian Coin Review' (now incorporated into the 'Australasian Coin & Banknote Magazine') mentioned having found, what appeared to be, an unlisted Austrian Ducat dated 1752 bearing the legend 'FRANC. D.G. R.I.S. A. GER. IER. REX.' with the portrait of Francis of Lorraine on the obverse and the legend 'TU DOMINE SPES MEA' on the reverse. It was very similar but 'not quite right' in comparison to others of that time period.
The 'coin' was in fact manufactured and distributed on behalf of the 'READERS DIGEST' organisation some 12 years ago as a promotional gimmick, and samples regularly turn up on market stalls in both 'gold' and 'silver' finishes.
These 'coins' usually have a dark chemical reaction spot in the centre where they had been attached with an adhesive glue to a 'Reader's Digest' give-away sheet. |

Until the french revolution spread beyond the borders, the Austrian Netherlands reoognized and protected a clerical state within its territory: the Principate of Liège, governed by the prince-bishop residing there. Until the 1860's the prince bishop had minting rights. Prince-bishop Jean-Theodore de Bavière (Johann Theodor von Bayern) abused his minting rights flooding the principate and the Austrian Netherlands with underweight circulation silver and poor alloys. Minting rights were withdrawn and the only coins produced later on were (low mintage) commemorative gifts to diplomats and high ranking visitors to the Prince-Bishop. Liège Plaquette 1752 (2.14g, billion). There were similar billion coins in the Austrian Netherlands, worth 10, 14 and 20 liards, with value indicated on the reverse. This one has no value indication.  |

Sorry, no escalin from Liège. However here's a 1752 escalin from the Austrian Netherlands, minted in Antwerp. These silver coins were most common in everyday circulation. Hence they often are in a poorer grade than Ducatons or Kronenthalers. This one is about the best you may get without spending a hefty sum. A terrible die crack on the obverse though. Seems they minted till the dies fell apart completely. With a fineness of about 0.600, the escalin also holds the middle ground between the billion 10 & 14 liards and the Ducatons minted in those days.  Edited by Gwyde

The bonnet top coat interrupts the text. In quarter 1 and 4 of the weapon Palatinate (lion) and in quarters 2 and 3, the arms of Bavaria (diamonds). In the center crowned with a bonnet oval shield arm containing the perron of Liege. To this weapon shield in a cross shape four different coats of arms placed. These are the weapons of Loon (above), Franchimont (right), Horne (below) and Bouillon (left). The upper arm interrupts the text.
