Thanks Petrus! yes, I was searching for an older coin to complement my then small collection of Austrian coinage and chanced upon this on ebay, from a seller in Germany. I don't know if there are many other local collectors as interested in these types of coins as I am, but I get the impression that I may be among a small exception.

anyway, beauty knows no boundaries!

Yes, sg93, those are beautiful pieces! Thank you for sharing.

Here are two tin farthings from 1684.

These coins were produced to help the struggling tin industry in England but proved to be unpopular due to how quickly they wear down and corrode. They were struck with a copper plug in the center to deter counterfeiters. I have seen a couple of heavy imitations without plugs that were probably struck in lead. Tin farthings and halfpence were struck from 1684 to 1692 and were later replaced by copper issues from 1694 on.

The date for these coins is struck on the edge, along with the motto "Nummorum Famulus", which translates to "The servant of the coinage". A source that I found suggests that this was done to deter counterfeiters as well, and that the motto itself is offered in reference to that protection.

The first is from the reign of Charles II.
The date was difficult to get a good picture of, but it is on the edge. This type was minted from 1684 to 1685, with the latter date being extremely rare.

The second is from the reign of James II. James came to power on February 6, 1685, but the calendar of the times celebrated the new year on March 25 instead of January 1. This meant that, according to records there, James II came to power on February 6, 1684. This coin carries the date 1684 along the edge, as shown on the bottom of the picture.

But, but, but ... 'Petrus', where is the information to show that the coin was actually minted in 1683?
The nice holed English Threepence saved the day though and I can post this now:

We had the discussion about the dates before. (See 10/20/2014 in this topic).
I promised to wait posting such coins untill someone posted a coin with the right date.
The Portugal coin can be minted from 1683 until 1705.
I do not know where to post such a coin, but I think that these coins have the right to be shown.
