1579 MANSFIELD THALER: Mansfield was a small silver-mining area of Germany that was absorbed by Saxony in the 1700's and subsequently became part of Prussia. Familiar 'rider' imagery shows Saint George the Dragon Slayer. This is the eye-catching piece bought at a public sale some years ago that sparked my interest in early thalers and other large pre-industrialization dated silver coins.

Here is a pair from the Spanish Siege of Maastricht between March 12-July 1, 1579. There were several denominations minted from a 1/2 Stuiver all the way up to 40 Stuivers. They were all minted in copper. 2 Stuivers: 16 Stuivers:

1576 leeuwendaalder / lion daalder from the Dutch province of Holland, Dordrecht mint. These were hand made and typically exhibit areas of weak detail. This example is notable for a better obverse strike, particularly with the Knight's face.
