I obtained this coin some years ago. The obverse seems double struck giving the coin an unusual but pleasing aspect I think. It is 42mm in diameter. There were five coins in the group and the dealer sold the group for $150 because they were all covered with fuzzy green corrosion. You could barely discern what was underneath the green. I gently restored the coins as best I could and sold the other four for around $200.

The 'bead' doesn't seem to match the field, if you know what I mean. The expression on the bird looks like it's having a 'poop'. I don't collect this type, but have seen a good few in the shop. I don't think it's right. The finishing touch is the centre hole, looks drilled with a modern bit.

I'm not an expert on this series but have looked at a lot of these lately and I see nothing wrong with this coin.

Your probably right echizento, just looks a bit wrong to me. Only seen and handled a few hundred of these so not my line. The curve on the edge looks very neat though.

Well, I give up... I cant find a single coin to match this. It looks totally wrong to me yet everyone else says it is right...

Im with metdet...the more I look at it, the worse the feeling I have about it. My Ptolemies (I have 3) are all the same shaped flan. Rounded with a flat plateau for the top like its cast into a rounded bottom. Imagine a teacake - that shape, but obviously not so 3d. The flans are caste too, so there should be evidence of a sprue on either side of the coin.
Heres a nice test...those dimples should line up, surely. One looks really off centered and one also looks quite shallow. Mine are more even than that and line up.
The eagles a bit...funky, too. The facial area looks odd but that might just be the grade.

None of the 'dimples' on the 4 Ptolemy's I own line up within a few millimeters of each other (except the small 22mm). Larger sized Ptolemy's are almost always hammered and or filed around the edges so if you have evidence of a sprue I would be really suspicious. The coin looks good ...... but looks can be deceiving !

I've seen lots of these and it looks fine. It takes skill and time to remove "fuzzy green corrosion". You deserve your profit.
